Arms and Armor
For many, hair is an extension of the self. A marker of personality. A defense mechanism. A shield. For some, hair is an accessory for purchase and manipulation. This series shines a light on the practice of hair prep as a channel for accessing an aspirational self, particularly for black women.
Many of the paintings enclosed reference screenshots from amateur DIY hair extension installation YouTube videos. Highlighting the precision, pain and beauty of the journey to a new self, the series also makes a nod to the role of technology in the dissemination of how to be.
